What's Not Covered in This Book |

This book is full of helpful lessons on object-oriented programming. However, there are some concepts that are not covered in full detail. The full specifications for the Unified Modeling Language (UML), which is the leading modeling language in object-oriented programming, aren't exhaustively covered in this book. The topics of workgroup modeling and security can be quite complex, so although the book gives some fundamental coverage of these, the complexities are not fully covered. Also, a detailed treatment of Data Access Objects (DAO) isn't included, although the classes that encapsulate your application's interaction with them is covered. Day 7, Incorporating Third-Party Components, covers third-party controls in a general sense, but no detailed coverage of any specific third-party control is included. What you do learn about third-party controls, however, is how to effectively encapsulate your application from changes and failures in the controls so that you can easily replace them as needed. As with any book on object-oriented programming, there are more advanced concepts and modeling techniques such as the Object Constraint Language that are not covered, although you certainly learn enough in this book to effectively use the technology in Visual Basic. However, because UML is used in this book, further learning into other techniques should not prove to be difficult. Finally, not every possible subsystem or component you can develop is covered here. Instead, the most popular application subsystems are presented to you, and from there, you can extend your learning and experience into designing and implementing whatever subsystems you need for your special projects. |
